What Is True Custom Fitting?

A lot more than you probably think it is!

Custom fitting is a common buzz phrase in the golf retail business these days, and it gets applied to every club selling method under the sun. However, true, professional, custom golf club fitting is a much more thorough and detailed process than any twenty-minute retail or demo day "fitting system". None of these methods ever systematically fit more than a handful of the twenty-five fitting variables; they just don't have time. The major retail stores don't want their employees taking more than fifteen to thirty minutes to sell to a customer. It doesn't generate enough sales volume per hour of employee time or store overhead.

For a true, professional custom fit, you must go to a qualified, well-equipped professional clubmaker and clubfitter, who is willing to put in several hours working with you to ensure every one of the twenty-five variables is examined as each relates to your swing and your game. A good clubfitting professional will help you determine your proper specifications in:

  • club length, total weight and balance
  • clubhead loft, lie, face angle and overall design
  • shaft specifications (which far exceed simply flex)
  • grip size, material and design

Good clubfitting professionals will not neglect the wedges or the putter, and will help you choose from dozens of high-quality clubhead, shaft and grip designs. They will take a completely open-ended approach to determining set makeup, and wont force you to choose from pre-determined iron or wood set configurations. Your clubfitter will do all this while, at the same time, learning as much as possible about your current equipment, swing, game tendancies and problems, and future objectives and desires.

Professional clubmakers/clubfitters will pull all these specifications together and produce a set of clubs for you using their knowledge, experience and meticulous attention to detail. They will do so using appropriate modern technology and top quality components. The resulting set will feel and play better than any clubs you have ever found off the rack or through a major retail fitting.
